The new scoreboard, unveiled recently, was made possible through grant money. In addition to being used by Yorktown High School and middle school swimmers, the pool hosts a variety of competitions and meets, drawing competitors from throughout the Hudson Valley, officials said.

The state-of-the-art Time System Aquatic Touch Pad scoreboard also brings the pool in compliance with current standards for scoring at high school swimming competitions, school officials said.

“Having this Touch Pad Scoring System will have a positive impact on both the boys and girls varsity swim teams and the entire school community. It shows how serious we are about helping our athletes pursue their dreams,” said Flo Nardone, Yorktown Schools athletic director.

The swimming pool in the Mildred E. Strang Middle School is used by all middle school students during physical education classes and by high school swim teams. When the district made numerous upgrades to the pool and filtration system in recent years funding was not available for electronic scoring pads, officials said

One grant was from H.W. Wilson Foundation, which provides financial assistance for educational causes and was established by H.W. Wilson, a resident of Yorktown.

The second half of the funding came from a state grant supported by State Sen. Terrence Murphy of Yorktown.

“I am proud to be a partner of this important project that helps Yorktown's swimming pool move further into the 21st Century," Murphy said.

Swim captains Madison Townes, Kendall John and Madelana Wrubel, all seniors, said they were looking forward to the fall swim season even more now.

“Now when we break records we will know right away,” Townes said.
