Large Pig Kicks Off Reading Program At Mohansic School

YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- A pig's visit kicked off the start of a month-long One School, One Book Campaign, when all students, staff and families at Mohansic Elementary School in Yorktown Heights will read the same book. The book that was chosen was "Charlotte's Web."

The kindergarten to third grade school hosted the 170-pound pot belly pig. She oinked, squealed, ate donuts and enticed the students to read a book about the adventures of a pig named Wilbur and his web-spinning friend Charlotte.

As part of the book campaign, there will be related studies about farms, insects, animals and discussions of how important it is to learn about, and appreciate, others. The book is a story of friendship and salvation on a farm.

One School, One Book is a project of a Richmond, Virginia-based group that seeks to promote family literacy and the joys of sharing books. The Mohansic PTA decided to participate this year and chose this story, hoping it would appeal to both boys and girls and encourage all to read another story by E.B. White.

White, who wrote at least 37 books, was born in Mount Vernon. Students will be reading the book and creating projects about related topics. For pre-readers, there will be audio editions. The activity received significant support from the PTA.

Students received a paperback and there will be prizes, small stuffed pigs and decorated book bags, as the month goes on.

The pot belly pig came from Pied Piper Pony Rides & Petting Zoo in Patterson.

"It's a chance to read a great book and revisit a favorite story," said teacher Raymond Cavallo. "Many of your teachers read this when they were your age and your parents probably read this too. And I hope your children will one day read it."
