Every month, the hospital names an Employee of the Month, nominated by co-workers. The employee is surprised with balloons and cookies and honored by having their portrait hung on the wall along the front corridor where it hangs for one year.
"This is something that means a lot to our employees," said Hudson Valley Hospital President John Federspiel. "By commissioning these portraits, we let everyone in the hospital know how much we value our dedicated employees and the job they do."
The hospital has been doing this for eight years.
"Their dedication is extraordinary," Federspeil said. "This is one of my favorite days of the year. This is a very special place to work."
Eileen Neary, who works in administration and volunteer services, was one of the heroes honored. A Cortlandt resident, Neary was a longtime volunteer before she joined the hospital seven years ago.
"There are so many people to help at the hospital and I enjoy all the ways I can contribute," Neary said. "This is very special. It means you are appreciated where you work."
Neary said she was very surprised to receive the honor.
"I never saw it coming," Neary said. "This is a great place to work."
Susan Jackson, who works in the mailroom, was another employee honored.
"I love that I get to meet wonderful people from every department each day," Jackson, a Croton resident, said. "This is a wonderful feeling. It was a great surprise. It means a lot. All the people who work here are very nice."
Susan Sheehy,a captain of the reward and recognition team, helps pick the heroes each year.
"Over the years I have learned so much about the special people I work with at the hospital," Sheehy said. "It's really wonderful to see them receive this recognition for their work."
Federspiel said employees always have a warm smile for patients.
"It's comforting for patients," Federspiel said. "They work and care for the sick and the needy under stressful conditions. It's a gift."
