North Castle Dog Park To Be Debated On Wednesday

ARMONK, N.Y. – In what has become a heated issue in Armonk, the possibility of turning part of Wampus Brook Park into a North Castle dog park will be discussed Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the Town Annex Meeting Room, 17 Bedford Road.

The Town Board will hold its normal public work session. A dog park expert will be in attendance to lend her professional opinion as to whether the location is suited for a dog park.

“The woman we have coming in is a specialist on the matter and has helped plan several town dog parks,” North Castle Town Supervisor Howard Arden told The Daily Voice in March. “So it’s pretty exciting she volunteered to come talk to us.”

Arden said this April 17 discussion should give a much clearer assessment as to when the town can expect a dog park to be ready—if at all.

North Castle Town Councilwoman Diane DiDonato-Roth has met with resistance while spearheading the project. A petition, dubbed “Put The Breaks On The Dog Park!” was launched last week and was circulated through the email of putthebreaksonthedogpark@gmail.com.

It goes into depth about concerns over the Town Board's process for turning the recently cleared section of Wampus Brook Park into a dog park.

“Many residents and business owners of North Castle are concerned about the negative impact that a Wampus Brook dog park will have on our Wampus neighbors, the character of our historic downtown, and our town budget,” the petition says. “We aren’t going to stand idly by and let our local elected officials fast track this dog park with secret budgets, mystery benefactors and without the input or involvement of the community that will be affected by the project.”

However, DiDonato-Roth is confident about the park’s location and process.

“We are not doing this dog park to do it wrong,” she said. “We are doing this to do it right.”

In The Armonk Daily Voice poll “Are you in favor of the Wampus Brook Park Dog Park project,” 171 readers have voted “yes,” 124 have voted “no” and six are “indifferent.”
