Just before 5 p.m. on Wednesday, members of the Port Chester Police Department responded to a request for assistance by police from Greenwich, Conn.

Greenwich police officers said they were pursuing a bank robbery suspect southbound on the New England Thruway (I-95). They said the bank robber's vehicle crashed in Port Chester and that the suspect was fleeing on foot into a housing complex at Nella Lane in the village of Port Chester.

Responding Port Chester officers sealed off the immediate area and began a search of the outside perimeter with the assistance of the Harrison Police K-9 unit, according to Port Chester Police Chief Richard Conway.

Greenwich police later advised responding officers that the suspect, described as a white male in his 20s -- between 5'5" and 5'7" with a medium build and wearing blue jeans -- had entered an apartment on Nella Lane, forcing the residents out.

Police interviewed a 51-year-old female and her 15-year-old daughter who stated that the suspect was heard trying to enter their apartment. The pair confronted the suspect at the door and a struggle ensued at which time the suspect entered the apartment and ran to a rear first-floor bedroom.

A perimeter was established around this residence, and occupants of adjacent buildings were evacuated, Conway said.

The Port Chester Police Emergency Service Unit was deployed to the scene as was the Westchester County Police Emergency Service Unit. A tactical entry was carried out by a team comprised of members of both units. This search proved negative for the suspect, Conway said.

Shortly thereafter, a handgun was recovered alongside I-95 adjacent to the suspect's vehicle.

At 6:09 p.m., Port Chester police responded to a report of a stolen vehicle at 25 Alto Ave. approximately one block from the Nella Lane location. There, it was discovered that a black 2016 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck had been stolen from the driveway. A short time later, this vehicle was located abandoned in the confines of the 47 precinct of the Bronx, Conway said.

The case is being investigated jointly by Port Chester Police Department, the Greenwich Police Department, the Westchester County Police Department and the FBI.

The Port Chester Police Department is seeking the public's assistance. Anyone with information on this case is urged to contact Port Chester Police Detective Bureau at 914-939-1000.

The suspect entered the Greenwich bank at 100 Mason St., displayed a handgun and demanded cash from a teller, police said. The teller complied with the suspect's demand, and the suspect fled with the money, police said. No one was injured during the robbery.
