Police intervention was required in Scarsdale when a 25-year-old man who admitted to taking methamphetamine was reportedly blocking a busy intersection and lying in the roadway.
Officers in Scarsdale received reports shortly after 5:30 p.m. on March 27 of a man wearing a black shirt and black pants jumping up and down before laying down in the intersection of Crane Road and Chase Road.
Upon arrival, police found Brooklyn resident Jonathan Cancel in the middle of the roadway, blocking traffic, according to a report released on Monday. Responding officers were able to coerce Cancel to the side of the road and reported that he was “pacing back and forth and seemed very anxious.”
Cancel went on to inform officers that he had jumped out of his girlfriend’s moving vehicle at approximately 1 p.m. that day while they were having an argument, and that “he did not know where he was and did not have any money,” and was waiting for his girlfriend to return to pick him up.
Police said that while interviewing Cancel, his eyes were observed to be extremely dilated, and Cancel admitted to taking Adderall earlier in the day. Officers stated that Cancel continued to pace, and could not sit still. Cancel later admitted that he had also taken “crystal meth” in the afternoon, and that he hadn’t slept in two days. Police said that Cancel also said that he “can’t control his actions when he’s on crystal meth.”
According to police, Cancel continually put his hands in his pockets, despite being warned not to, and admitted to being in possession of a hypodermic needle. Further investigation of Cancel found a glass pipe containing residue in his sock, at which point Cancel admitted to injecting himself twice in the arm and smoking a glass pipe with crystal meth a few hours before he was interviewed by police.
Once taken into police custody, Cancel was charged with misdemeanor counts of possession of a hypodermic instrument and criminal possession of a controlled substance. While in police custody, he told officers that he had a solid pestle in his rectum, which he voluntarily removed.
Cancel was ordered to have an Intake Examination after he was remanded to the Westchester County Jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail. He is due back in court later this year to answer the charges.
