Walter's In Mamaroneck Ranks Among DVlicious Contenders

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- The classic hot dog, in all its bronzed, charred perfection, holds a special place in the hearts – and stomachs -- of most Americans, especially come summer. July, in fact, is National Hot Dog Month, thanks to the designation by the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council.

Walter's Hot Dog Stand, 937 Palmer Ave, Mamaroneck

Frank Talk: This Westchester institution, known as much for its Chinese-looking pagoda stand as it is for its hot dogs, churns out a blend of beef, pork and veal that dates back to a family recipe created by Founder Walter Warrington in 1919.

In its current location since 1928 and still run by the family, Walter's dogs are split down the middle and grilled in a secret sauce until they're golden brown and the buns are toasted to a crisp. They are then slathered in Walter's mustard.

"The Walter's hot dog is not like any other hot dog as most of them are all beef, and boiled or grilled whole, and covered with toppings," explained Katharine Warrington Woodward, the owner's granddaughter and the Event and PR Manager. "Ours taste great on their own and don't need anything but mustard as the hot dog flavor is so delicious and unique."

Top This: Don't ask for sauerkraut, onions or chili. "Ninety-seven years without them and going strong!" stressed Warrington Woodward. "We never say the 's"' word." Instead, the place is famous for its house made Walter's mustard, a brown mustard with a hint of relish. Other options include plain brown mustard, or ketchup.
