Instead of cooking hot dogs and kicking back for the holiday weekend, area residents might be busy battening down the hatches as Tropical Storm Hermine makes it way up the East Coast, bringing with it a chance of heavy rains, coastal flooding and strong winds, according to the National Weather Service.

A Tropical Storm Watch, issued by the National Weather Service, went into effect at 11 a.m. Friday. For detailed info on the watch, click here.

The storm is expected to hit the area beginning late Saturday, according to AccuWeather.

Residents should be prepared for wind with gusts as high has 60 to 70 miles per hour from Long Island to coastal New Jersey and heavy, pounding rains, said AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Dave Dombek.

Wind gusts of 25 to 30 mph are expected in the Lower Hudson Vallie on Sunday and Monday.

Enough heavy rain and wind could occur to cause flash flooding, downed trees and power outages, said AccuWeather.

"With a storm of this nature, flooding rainfall can occur, regardless of prior dryness," according to AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Elliot Abrams.

Hermine is expected to effect the area late Saturday through Labor Day and, if it stalls, until the middle of next week, added AccuWeather.

There is still uncertainty as to the exact track of the storm and its possible impact on the area, so check back to the Daily Voice for updates.
