ARMONK, N.Y. Summer is right around the corner, but snow is on the mind of the North Castle Town Board as it considers changing the snow removal law for local businesses and property owners.
Town Supervisor Howard Arden said the town is considering changing the law for several reasons.
It just doesnt seem fair that we clear the sidewalks when it snows for certain businesses and not others, Arden said.
North Castles current policy on snow removal is that town workers are paid to clear town sidewalks that are directly in front of local businesses.
Arden said that because of the size of North Castle, town workers are usually not able to clear every sidewalk. He said the town is studying how much money it could save by requiring businesses to contribute to the snow removal.
The Town Board held a public hearing on the matter at its meeting this month. The hearing remains open while a decision is being considered.
Arden said multiple options are being considered.
There are different ways that we can do this. We can maybe have our businesses contribute a little bit of money each to hire a private company to do all of the snow removal for our sidewalks, Arden said. Were just trying to solicit as many ideas as possible.
He added that the town has talked to nearby towns to find out how they handle snow removal. It wont snow anytime soon, and Arden says the town is handling the situation accordingly; there is no set timetable for a decision.
We want to take our time with this. We dont want to jam it down anyones throat, Arden said. We just want to make sure that we get it right.
