Stevens made it to day three of the championships, falling in the first semifinal of the 100-meter sprint after a slow start. Stevens finished the race in eighth, with a time of 11.32 seconds. The heat was won by Côte d’Ivoire native Marie-Josee Ta Lou with a time of 10.87 seconds.

The event would ultimately be won by Jamaican Shell-Ann Fraser-Pryce. Netherlands native Dafne Schippers took silver, with American Tori Bowie claiming the bronze.

An Olympic finalist and former competitor at New Rochelle High School, Stevens has had a meteoric rise since taking her talents from Memorial Field to the University of Oregon. Mount Vernon Mayor Richard Thomas hosted a viewing party for the community over the weekend.

"Mount Vernon is the birthplace of champions and we are thrilled that Deajah Stevens continues to make us proud on a global stage,” he said. “Thousands of people of all ages are inspired by her determination to pursue her dreams and her preparedness to seize them.

“As the woman who inaugurated our Wall of Legends, I am humbled by how she represents Mount Vernon, and serves as another positive role model for our children. We wish her well in her journey forward and look ahead to welcoming her back to celebrate at Slide the City.”
