RYE, N.Y. Delayed once by a sudden summer storm for 90 minutes, Day 1 of the Westchester County Swimming Championships was postponed Monday when a second storm shook Rye Playland Pool sending swimmers, coaches, park staffers and spectators scurrying home.
Westchester County Recreation and Parks officials sent swimmers back to their cars and team camps about 30 minutes before the scheduled 4:30 p.m. start for more than an hour before the rain subsided and the clouds parted. Swimmers and coaches were allowed back on the pool deck for warm-ups at about 5:30 p.m. But just before 6 p.m., a darkening sky moved in from the north and west and thunder rolled and lightning filled the sky.
The four-day meet, which draws club, town and individual swimmers from all over the county, was cancelled due to dangerous conditions and will resume Tuesday at 4 p.m. -- with warmups at 3 p.m. -- through Friday.
