Shoreline Classic Highlights Saturday Tournaments

High school wrestling fans will enjoy an action-packed Saturday of tournaments, all within a 10-minute drive of each school, with New Rochelle, Scarsdale and Ardsley hosting.

The 48th annual Ted Murphy Shoreline Classic will be held at New Rochelle. The tournament is named after legendary New Rochelle wrestling coach Ted Murphy, who created the event. Wrestling will begin, 9 a.m. The championship finals, third- and fifth-place matches will be wrestled simultaneously, on three mats, beginning, 5:30 p.m.

The 21-team field includes Arlington, Brookfield (Ct.), Commack (L.I.), Edgemont, Fordham Prep, Fox Lane, Greenwich (Ct.), Hen Hud, Horace Mann, Iona Prep, LaSalle, North Rockland, Nyack, Pearl River, Pine Bush, Port Chester, Putnam Vocational (Ma.), Tappan Zee, Walt Whitman (L.I.), Westlake and New Rochelle.

New Rochelle enters Shoreline with the most No. 1 seeds -- Aaron (170 pounds) and Jordan Butler (195) and A.J. (120) and Nick Barbaria (99). Fox Lane is next with three top seeds -- Sam Speno (126 pounds), Danny Ventura (132) and Tommy Grippi (138).

Scarsdale will host 14 teams with wrestling beginning, 9 a.m. The field is comprise of Eastchester, Garden City (L.I.), Harrison, Mount Vernon, Ossining, Pawling, Pearl River, Pleasantville, Port Chester, Rye, Stepinac, White Plains, Yorktown and Scarsdale.

The 10 teams competing in the Joe Radomski tournament at Ardsley include Beacon, Croton, Dobbs Ferry, Edgemont, Hastings, Irvington, Lehman, Mamaroneck, Salesian and Ardsley. Lehman is coached by former Ardsley stand-out Mike Tina. Wrestling opens, 9:30 a.m, and the finals are set for 5 p.m.
