Section 1 Wrestlers Open in State Championships

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Somers’ Brian Realbuto headlines a senior class of Section 1 wrestlers who achieved and are aiming for firsts at the 50th annual New York State Public High School Athletic Association wrestling championships beginning Friday.

Wrestling will commence in the large and small-school divisions, 10 a.m. at the Times Union Center in Albany.

Realbuto, and his brother, Dylan, are among six Westchester County wrestlers returning to the state championships. Joining the Realbuto brothers are Fox Lane’s Sam Speno and Danny Ventura, Ardsley’s Drew Longo and Edgemont’s Trey Aslanian.Brian Realbuto is hoping to become Section 1’s first three-time state champion and five-time state place finisher. Realbuto, who is 43-1 this season, is seeded first in the 152-pound weight class.

Speno, who has a runner-up and fifth-place finish, is looking for his first state championship. He, as well as Ventura, a 2011 state finalist, is seeded first in their respective weight classes.

Fox Lane has the most representatives among Westchester County schools with four -- Matt Pasqualini (160 pounds), Tommy Grippi (138), Speno (126) and Ventura (132). Grippi’s older brother, Joey, was twice a state place finisher. Somers is next with three -- the Realbuto brothers and Dom DeVita (220).

Yorktown achieved a program first with two sectional champions in one year, juniors Steven Sabella (170) and David Varian (285).

For the second consecutive year a New Rochelle wrestler earned a wild card. Senior Tyler Lilly, the large-school 220-pound runner-up, follows Malcolm Allen, who won the 2011 285-pound state title.

Irvington junior Brett Pastore (145) became the second member of his family to win a sectional title. Older brother, Ryan, won the Section 1 small-school 152-pound championship in 2007.
