Section 1 Crowns Large-School Wrestling Champions

WEST NYACK, N.Y. - Section 1 wrestlers who will compete in the state tournament were decided on Sunday as Clarkstown South High School hosted the Section 1 Division 1 (large schools) Wrestling Championships.

Mahopac crowned a pair of sectional champs in Garrett Semenetz (99 pounds; see Semenetz' comments in our chat with champions video) and Mike DiNardo (195), who won for the second time.

Brewster also had two champions - sophomore Grant Cuomo (see Cuomo's comments in our chat with champions video) won at 152 pounds, and Mike Larm took a title at 285.

John Jay-East Fishkill's Randy Earl won the 120-pound crown, Carmel's Kevin Knox won at 132, and Arlington's Brady Robin picked up a title at 145 pounds (see comments from Knox and Robin in our chat with champions video).

Fox Lane sophomore Mike Grippi came in ranked No. 2 in NYS, and had lost with five seconds on the clock last year. Grippi rebounded to win a championship at 138, improving his season mark to 43-1 (See Grippi's comment's in our chat with champions video.)

New Rochelle got individual titles from freshman Jake Logan (see Logan's comments in our chat with champions video) at 160 (Logan improved to 41-6), and Jake Shore won at 126.

North Rockland senior Anthony Sulia earned his second title, winning at 113 pounds, and Eastchester senior Nunzio Crowley won the 170-pound title - and earned Most Outstanding Wrestler honors.

Clarkstown South senior Jake Spreckman took home the 220 title, Justin Lopez of Yonkers fought his way to a title, and Alex Melikian of Lakeland/Panas took home the 182-pound title.

John Jay-Cross River won the team title, topping defending champ Suffern by 3.5 points, and Arlington was third.
