As NFL players’ protests of the national anthem continue to be at the forefront of discussion regarding the current football season, Det. Keith Olson, the President of the Affiliated Police Association of Westchester penned a letter to Goodell and NFL Player’s Association Executive Director DeMaurice Smith regarding players taking a knee during the anthem.

“Over the last year, we have seen countless protests by NFL players, often in the form of taking a knee during the playing of the national anthem,” Olson said. “These protests were initiated by former (San Fransisco) 49er quarterback Colin Kaepernick, a focal point of his protest being perceived police brutality, which is often a topic of major concern in our society today.”

Olson said that in an effort to improve relations between police and the communities they are tasked with protecting, they’ve reached out to community leaders, going to schools and speaking with civic, religious and political leaders.

“Like most problems, a solution is likely found by starting an open and honest dialogue,” he noted. “This effort should include motivated and invested people who are willing to listen to each other instead of just stating their positions.

“I am calling on NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL Players Association Executive Director DeMaurice Smith to work with me and other law enforcement leaders to facilitate these discussions,” Olson added.

“I say to all NFL leaders, don’t take a knee. Take a seat. At the table. With us.”
