Northern Westchester Tennis Champion Comes Home

OSSINING, N.Y. -- Jamie Loeb, an Ossining resident who won the NCAA Women's Singles Tennis National Championship, had a celebratory homecoming Monday.

August 3 was declared Jamie Loeb Day in the Village of Ossining and Loeb led an instructional session for kids at Ossining's Day Camp tennis program at the Nelson Park tennis courts. 

Loeb attends the University of North Carolina and is the first Tar Heel to win the singles national champion. She was named Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year for the second consecutive year. At the end of August, Loeb will be playing in the U.S. Open.

"It's great to be recognized," Loeb said. "Ossining has been a big part of my life. I would tell these kids to the best they can be and to enjoy playing tennis. Don't get burnt out."

Loeb grew up playing at Ryder Park and was on the Ossining High School tennis team.

"The community has always been very supportive of me," Loeb said. "It means a lot."

Kim Clijsters and Roger Federer are two of Loeb's tennis inspirations.

Ossining Mayor Victoria Gearity said it was a very exciting to have an athlete like Loeb hail from Ossining.

"It's nice that she spent the afternoon with these kids," Gearity said. "She can inspire young athletes. She's a great role model."
