MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- Mamaroneck High School's varsity hockey team is en route to Buffalo for Saturday's Division 1 state playoffs -- their first shot at the title in seven years.
The "Frozen Four" playoffs are held at Buffalo's HarborCenter.
Coach Mike Chiapparelli's Tigers are now 22-2, and ranked third among public high school teams statewide.
Mamaroneck faces fifth-ranked Pittsford at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.
Chiapparelli told Daily Voice on Friday that his team was very relaxed, enjoying the trip and "in very good spirits."
MHS' last trip to the state's semifinal playoffs was in 2009. The Tigers lost a nail-biter to Greece-Arcadia for the state championship that year, 3-2, in the final three minutes of play.
The other hockey semifinalists this weekend are West Genesee High School and Saratoga High School. West Genesee has won four state hockey titles, while Saratoga has won two state hockey championships.
Mamaroneck advanced with a 5-1 win over Massena during the regional championship at Sport-O-Rama Ice Rink in Monsey last Saturday. The Tigers won the Section I Division I championship by defeating Suffern, 5-1.
Pittsford beat Williamsville North, 2-1, to advance to the "frozen four" playoffs.
The Pittsford Panthers have a very strong defenseman, according to Chiapparelli, and a strong first line on offense.
