The trend of high school players giving verbal commitments earlier and earlier has been evident the last few years in the Hudson Valley.
On Saturday, the first Class of 2019 player from the region gave a verbal commit.
Joey Corbett, a midfielder who started for North Rockland's varsity team as an eighth-grader this past spring, committed to Maryland.
Corbett is believed to be the first-ever athlete in the proud history of North Rockland athletics to verbally commit as a ninth-grader.
Corbett registered 19 goals and 20 assists and earned all-league honors this past spring.
This past summer, playing for the Prime Time travel team, he was an all-star the IL Invitational Session 3 and also performed well as the NXT Showcase.
