PURCHASE, N.Y. Nick Daniello saw the opportunity present itself Friday, and the defensive midfielder went for it.
Daniello intercepted a clearing pass, charged toward goal and unleashed his shot. Once Daniello released the ball, he was checked to the ground. When he got up and saw his Prime Time Lacrosse teammates going crazy, he knew what had happened.
His goal with 1:52 remaining in the four-minute sudden-victory overtime gave Prime Time Lacrosse a 6-5 win over Ernies Lacrosse in the Sound Shore Summer Lacrosse League Division I mens final.
It was Prime Times third consecutive title. The three Daniello brothers scored five of the six goals as Mike, a sophomore at Syracuse, and Chris, 24, a Syracuse graduate, scored two goals apiece. Bronxville graduate and University of Notre Dame sophomore Jack Near had Prime Times other goal.
I knew I had a shot at it in the air, and when I had it, I knew I would have a good one-on-one with the goalie, said Nick Daniello, 26, a recent Touro Law School graduate.
It was Nick Daniellos first goal of the summer, and he could not have timed it better. Scoring the championship-winning goal gives him bragging rights on his brothers.
I couldnt go the whole summer without a goal, and I couldnt be the only Daniello in the household without one, Nick Daniello said with a laugh, as he held the championship cup. Winning gets harder, but it never gets old, especially when you play with a great group of guys, including a couple of kids who grew up in the Prime Time Lacrosse program.
Daniello was referring to many fellow John Jay-Cross River graduates, including Kevin Stockwell, whose father, through Car Quest, is a co-sponsor of the team. The younger teammates who came through the Prime Time program include Nick Daniellos younger brother Chris; Charlie McCormick, a Bronxville graduate and Georgetown sophomore; recent Byram Hills graduate Andrew Larrabee, who will play at Notre Dame next year; and Near.
