ARMONK, N.Y. The Byram Hills Bobcats used a strong transition game, a smothering defense and good outside shooting Monday to open a 14-point lead at halftime on the way to a 66-56 victory over Poughkeepsie in the opening round of the Slam Dunk Tournament at the Westchester County Center.
The Bobcats (5-2) advanced to Tuesdays 8 p.m. bracket final against Albertus Magnus, which defeated While Plains in the other opening-round game. Poughkeepsie will face White Pains in the 6 p.m. consolation game.
Senior guard Jeff Lynch scored 12 of his game-high 24 points in the first half surge that stunned the traditionally strong Pioneers team that couldnt seem to stop the Bobcats penetration to the basket or outside shooting. Lynch made two of his three 3-pointers in the first half.
Jemar Dancy led Poughkeepsie with 21 points and 11 rebounds and the Pioneers trimmed some of the first-half deficit by outscoring the Bobcats 35-31 in the second half. Ray Knight had 12 points and Devin Lawrence added 11 points and seven rebounds for the Pioneers.Senior forward Andrew Maloney had a strong all-around performance with 11 points, including nine in the first half, 10 rebounds and five steals for Byram Hills.
