ARMONK, N.Y. – Byram Hills High School boys basketball player Brian Skelly is The Armonk Daily Voice Athlete of the Month for February after playing his best two games of the season when it mattered most.
Skelly was instrumental in the Bobcats’ run to the finals of the Section 1 Class A tournament but immediately gave credit to his teammates for his success.
"I’ve got to thank my teammates because they put me in a position to succeed," Skelly said. "Everyone getting me open and they just give me the confidence. They believe in me and I love this team. It just all comes from them."
Byram Hills ultimately lost to Poughkeepsie, 56-47, in the championship game.
The top-seeded Bobcats faced No. 17 Beacon in the first round and were 0.53 seconds away from a shocking early exit. They were trailing, 58-55, until Skelly heaved up a desperation three-pointer off an inbounds pass that hit nothing but nylon to save Byram Hills’ season.
Skelly also hit a three-pointer in overtime to tie the game at 63 with 52 seconds left before the Bobcats eventually won when Mike Giacomo scored his only points of the game with a buzzer-beating layup.
The Bobcats then hosted No. 8 Somers in the quarterfinals. The Tuskers gave Byram Hills all it could handle in the first half and the Bobcats clung to a 31-30 lead at the break.
But in the third quarter, Skelly again took control and poured in five three-pointers to put the game out of reach.
The Student-Athlete of the Month is chosen by the sports reporters and editors of The Daily Voice.
