ARMONK, N.Y. – Thirteen-year-old Armonk fencing sensation Sylvie Binder won the gold medal in the Y14 women’s foil event at the United States Fencing Association’s Super Youth Circuit tournament in Durham, N.C. earlier this month.

Binder emerged from a field of 61 fencers from around the country to earn the gold. She also earned more national ranking points to further cement her position as one of the top young fencers in the national. She entered the tournament ranked 12th.

Binder defeated four other fencers, including 13-year-old Anna Zhou of Boston, in the gold medal match.

The 13-year-old will next compete in the USFA’s North American Cup in Louisville, Ky. on Friday. She will face some older fencers, including some Olympians from the 2012 Games in London. Binder will then compete at the USFA’s Junior Olympic Fencing Championships on Friday, Feb. 15 in Baltimore.

Binder, an eighth grader at H.C. Crittenden Middle School in Armonk, trains at the Fencing Academy of Westchester in Hawthorne under two-time Olympian Slava Grigoriev.
