Yorktown Police Start Law Enforcement Club At High School

YORKTOWN, N.Y. -- Yorktown High School students and the Yorktown Police Department are forming a new relationship initiated by the police in an effort to have a better relationship with area youth.

Yorktown students will have an open dialogue with the Police Department by taking part in a new law enforcement club.

The department organized a law enforcement club at the school, the first one of its kind in the community, to provide students with the opportunity to learn about forensics, fingerprinting, police functions and local laws as well as ask questions about police work.

“We decided it was a good time to engage the students and give them a chance to find out what we do and to ask questions. We want to meet the kids and interact with them,” said Chief Robert Noble, who introduced the club to students at the school."

The department provides around-the-clock police protection to the town’s nearly 40,000 residents. Yorktown High School students are accustomed to seeing police in the school hallways and on the district campus with the presence of school resource officers.

Officer Robert Doerr, a familiar face on campus, will lead the club.

“It’s a great way to educate the students about law enforcement and to build positive relationships with the local department,” Principal Joseph DeGennaro said.

The department also plans to offer the program at Lakeland High School.
