WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- It's that time of the year for students throughout Westchester County.

Students are heading back to school, ready to begin the 2016-2017 school year, ready for a year of homework, books and hopefully not many dirty looks from their teachers. Some schools were back in session Thursday with others going back on Tuesday.

Over the summer, the Yorktown School District underwent some construction and renovations . Yorktown High School received a new entrance, the entrance and kitchen at Mildred E. Strange Middle School was renovated, a computer lab was being repurposed for a reading room at Crompond School, the library was being renovated at Mohansic Elementary and boilers were replaced at Brookside.

Carol Conklin-Spillane, who previously was principal at Sleepy Hollow High School, took over as superintendent of the Pocantico Hills School District . Conklin-Spillane said she has enjoyed the reception she has received from parents, teachers and students since she started on July 1.

Longtime Bronxville superintendent David Quattrone said he will retire at the end of the 2016-2017 school year . Quattrone has been superintendent of Bronxville since 2005 and said he wants to help ensure his successor has a smooth transition into the job.

Mount Vernon students might be sporting some new clothes . The school board approved a new policy that will “allow schools in the district to mandate students wear uniforms if they present certification to the Board,” which includes the approval of at least 80 percent of parents from that school. Students will have input on potential uniform selection and there will be uniform waivers for health or religious reasons and the district has vowed to offer assistance in purchasing them to benefit families struggling financially.
