The Volunteer Center of United Way will honor nine individuals and groups at the dinner on Thursday, April 24, at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel in Tarrytown.

Broadcast journalist Lou Young of WCBS-TV, will emcee the event, which begins at 8 p.m.

The Collegium is designed to provide to mature adults intellectually stimulating classes as well as an environment for discussion and social interaction. The Collegium was founded by Edith Litt in 2004 with 70 participants and has since expanded to serve more than 220.

Behind the scenes are the ten board members, led by David Oestreich and Clare Ahern, and more than 20 additional volunteers who devote countless hours as they design programming, seek and cultivate instructors, write brochures, register participants, and assist with the logistics of offering simultaneous classes.

For Westchester Community College, the Collegium is a natural outgrowth of its mission to provide accessible, high quality education to a diverse community, as well as for seniors in the county.  The majority of participants return each semester due to the rich and intriguing course offerings and Collegium is ready to help meet the need for stimulating intellectual interaction and social stimulation for mature adults in Westchester.

Individual ticket prices for the 2014 Volunteer Spirit Awards are $75 per person ($150 for a Friend ticket, with journal recognition), and sponsorship packages and journal advertising rates are available.  All proceeds benefit The Volunteer Center’s work to promote volunteerism.
