The Hen Hud students are mentoring the students at Pine Ridge Girls School, which is located on the Lakota Indian Reservation in South Dakota.

The collaboration began when Christine Rogers, science research director at Hen Hud met Beau White, the science teacher at Pine Ridge during a professional conference in Washington, D.C and the two decided to work together to help Pine Ridge develop a science research program. The schools are the first in the country to establish a partnership.

On the Lakota Indian Reservation, 70 percent of students drop out of high school while 97 percent live below the poverty line.

“Science research and project-based programs are essential in developing college readiness and empowering students," Rogers said.

On a video chat, sophomore Adhithya Rajasekar and junior Thea Barbelet shared their research projects with the Pine Ridge students. Rajasekar discussed a scientific paper on molecular signaling in brain embryonic development and Barbelet presented her summer research on bumblebees.
