At a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the school, Superintendent of Schools William Donohue thanked the foundation and its donors for paying for the 1:1 Mobile Learning pilot.
“This Chromebooks’ initiative provides Byram Hills with a tool that … has the potential to change classrooms in the same way that PCs changed the business world,” Donohue said. “The BHEF's vision and support has provided Byram Hills with another great resource for our students.”
A very excited sixth-grade class also joined in and shouted out thanks to all those who contributed toward the new Chromebooks.
The grant will give teachers more opportunities to integrate Internet-based learning opportunities into their lessons, and offer students the ability to tap educational applications and store their work in “the cloud.”
BHEF Chairman Scott Levy thanked the community for supporting the foundation’s first directed-giving campaign.
“It was a huge success,” Levy said. “The 1:1 grant will seamlessly integrate technology into the classroom and will enrich the sixth-grade learning experience.” The laptops, which use a Chrome operating system, are designed to be used while connected to the Internet.
The foundation’s $78,345 grant provided money for 210 Chromebook laptop computers for the sixth-graders to use throughout the school day, which will eliminate the need for them to check out a laptop one class at a time. It also paid for related software and charging stations. The pilot builds on earlier grants, including the BHEF Fast Path grant in 2012 and Cloud-Based Computing in 2013.
Students in other grades in the school will continue using Chromebooks by borrowing them when they’re needed for individual classes.
