ARMONK, N.Y. – While people try to remember love comes in all shapes and sizes on Valentine's Day, H.C. Crittenden Middle School students recently demonstrated such a notion when they hosted morning crafts and activities for students from Children’s Village in Dobbs Ferry.

Crittenden students and their guests shared breakfast while making Valentine’s using stickers and markers before a performance of "Annie Jr." from Crittenden students capped off the morning.

The visitors attend Greenburgh 11 Elementary and Middle schools, which provide specialized educational services to children with learning and emotional challenges. Most of them live at Children’s Village, a residential program for vulnerable children and adolescents.

Their visit to Armonk was a great change of pace, said Candida Frith,  assistant principal at Greenburgh 11.

“Our students look forward to coming here and really enjoy seeing the play,” she said.

Frith said the Valentine’s event, which was Feb. 6, was even better than usual because of the ongoing New York City bus strike had been disrupting normal activities by keeping many day students from classes.

Crittenden has a longstanding relationship with Greenburgh 11, which includes hosting an annual holiday party as well. Students in the VIP/Leo Club organize the events.

“Our students always step up to the plate,” said Crittenden teacher Denise Barnard, adding the relationship is good for everyone involved.

“It’s a school-to-school exchange, and we learn as much from it as they learn,” Barnard said.
