Byram Hills Students Show Assemblyman Buchwald How They Use Technology

ARMONK, N.Y. -- Assemblyman David Buchwald (D-Westchester) recently visited HC Crittenden Middle School in Armonk to see firsthand how Chromebook technology is being implemented in Byram Hills School District classrooms.

Through Buchwald’s efforts, the district received $50,000 in state aid to help support a “one-to-one” initiative, through which Byram Hills hopes to make a Chromebook laptop computer available to every student next year. Chromebooks, which rely on the web for resources, were chosen by the district because of their relatively low cost and flexibility.

An enthusiastic supporter of educational technology, Buchwald visited sixth-grade classes that are piloting the one-to-one initiative and spoke with students.

"One of the great pleasures of my job is getting to see how the funding I push for from state government can be put to such good use, as it has been in the Byram Hills School District," Buchwald said. “Watching the students and teachers use the latest in education technology as a means of learning was truly inspiring."

Superintendent William Donohue said the district strongly appreciated Buchwald’s support of Byram Hills and the use of technology in New York classrooms. He also thanked the assemblyman for being part of a practical civics lesson.

During the April 15 visit, Buchwald took time to speak to students studying the impact of plastic water bottles on the environment. He encouraged the students to share their opinions, even eliciting suggestions for legislation he might propose and support. The visit concluded at a traditional Computer Lab at Crittenden featuring desktop computers.

Byram Hills Director of Technology Andrew Taylor said students’ new access to Chromebooks meant traditional labs were less in demand. The district is responding by envisioning new ways to use the space to better support its goals in STEAM, (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math).
