The Byram Hills students among the top-10 scorers are:

  • Jonathan Mui and Nick Jindal, who won second-place for their helicopter entry. Their rubber-band powered helicopter flew for two minutes, 14 seconds. The boys were in first place until being edged out by the last team of the day whose helicopter flew one second longer.
  • Yasamin Bayley, with help from Audrey Saltzman and Sabrina You, took a fifth-place medal for his mousetrap vehicle.
  • Cameron Bremner and Nick Jindal earned medals with a sixth-place finish in the “Mission Possible” contest.
  • Audrey Saltzman and Sabrina You earned medals with a sixth-place finish in the “Exotic, Endangered, and Extinct” category.
  • Arjun Goyal and Matt Parisi finished in seventh-place in the “Rotor Egg Drop” category.

Coach Robert Sendlenski said the experience of the event was the real reward, but added that medals are always nice too. He said all 15 of his students on the team worked very hard leading up to Syracuse.

“All of the kids had a chance to throw themselves into a topic they were interested in,” he said. “The medals are a bonus.”

Sendlenski added the rules of the competition ensure that the students study a subject in depth, not just skim over it, which helps them grow as students.

The Byram Hills students won the chance to compete in the state contest, held April 12-13, by placing third in a regional competition held last month. Thirty-seven teams qualified for the state event out of the more than 200 teams that originally entered the Olympiad’s regional contests.
