Dressed in their caps and gowns, the 234 graduates listened as student speakers celebrated spoke and district officials offered advice. Salutatorian Kevin Chang and Valedictorian Nicole Kim told their classmates that they had all helped form the Class of 2016’s identity and contributed to its success.

“Class of 2016, we’ve had quite the run,” Chang said.

Kim added that their teachers had not only shown them how to learn – “but why we should want to.”

Chris Borsari, marking his last graduation as principal of Byram Hills, advised students to tackle life while remembering “to be humble and kind."

“Embrace kindness as a guiding principle of your life,” he said.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. William Donohue advised graduates to reject the idea that life was bleak or that our nation’s institutions needed to be dismantled.

“Don’t let people tell you how miserable you are,” he said.

School board President Robin Glat outlined three hopes for the graduates. She advised them to create their own blueprint for life, embrace new opportunities and experiences, and enjoy the journey.

“Keep looking forward,” she said. “The best is yet to come.”
