BOCES Students Recycle and Go Green for Earth Day

VALHALLA, N.Y. – A beautiful sunny day Friday was the perfect environment to celebrate Earth Day festivities at the Southern Westchester BOCES campus in Valhalla as students enjoyed various Earth-friendly exhibits.

“The goal is to just make the students aware about how delicate Earth is and how we need to preserve it,” said teacher Rick Grizzuti, the Green Tech coordinator for the event.

The outdoor stations served as learning areas for the students on how they can make an impact to improve the environment.  General Motors was on hand to demonstrate to students a vehicle run entirely by hydrogen, eco-friendly light bulbs were handed out and students had the opportunity to plant their own flowers in a new garden on the school’s grounds.

Several programs of Southern Westchester BOCES, which serves students from 32 component districts, also participated in the event by showcasing some of their talents from the classroom.

Students from the fashion program used recycled goods to create dresses. Materials such as plastic bags, old zippers and Velcro were used to make the Earth-friendly dresses.  Carmen Galiano, a fashion teacher at BOCES, said all of the materials were utilized in their own unique way.

“With the items like zippers or Velcro we have so much of it and only a little can be used for our clothing throughout the year so we figured why not make an entire dress out of it,” Galiano said.  “One student took a fashion magazine and took the pages out and constructed a dress with that and another was made out of old Target bags, which gave it a nice polka-dot look.”

For students such as Lauren Girasek of Sleepy Hollow, Friday’s event was all about learning about the environment while enjoying it at the same time.

“It’s always nice to get out of the class and enjoy the weather and make the school’s campus look better,” Girasek said.
