Dave and Alison Simon, the owner of Home Floors Today, coordinated the event, which brought together the community's educators and business owners. Teachers and administrators from the Byram Hills School District and members of the business  community gathered to honor Powderly.

According to Superintendent  Bill Donohue, the Byram Hills schools have two missions: "The first is to educate the students in an excellent manner," Donohue said in a prepared statement, "and to prepare them well for college." On a lighter note, Donohue added the second mission is to sell houses, and they get that.

“The fact that we can come together to honor someone who has made an enormous contribution to the kids in this district is important,” Donohue added in his statement. “There are so many ways that Evan Powderly has built a great school, has been a good principal, but the best thing about Evan Powderly is that he is a good person.”

Donohue presented him with an inscribed glass plaque that reads: Commitment to community to HC Crittenden Principal. "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influences stops."

Powderly thanked his colleagues and community business members. When he spoke of his many years working at Byram Hills, he emphasized he is especially appreciative and proud of his colleagues at the middle school.
