Tag Sale To Benefit Fairfield Man With ALS

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Many members of Roger Ludlowe High School’s Class of 1980 had not seen Dave Steffens since graduation more than 30 years ago. But when they heard of his recent health problems, a contingent of former classmates banded together to help.

Steffens has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly known as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. The disorder attacks the nervous system, specifically the nerves that control muscle function.

ALS gradually deteriorates a person’s motor functions until they are fully paralyzed. The condition is usually fatal within three to five years of diagnosis, with only a quarter living longer, according to the National Institutes of Health. There is no known cure for the disorder.

Steffens’ condition has deteriorated to the point that he has not been able to work for more than three years. He requires 24-hour care and cannot walk or feed himself.

“As time goes on, he knows, and we do as well, that he will require more care and adjuncts to allow him to function,” said his sister, Karen Avallon. “For now, we focus on today because tomorrow is just unimaginable at this time. We fight this as a family and know at times we all need help.”

To give Steffens and his family that help, a group of fellow Roger Ludlowe grads have organized a tag sale and bake sale for this Saturday. The group will sell donated clothing, household items and other merchandise at Fairfield Grace United Methodist Church. All profits will go toward Steffens’ medical care.

“There was a desire by so many to help Dave,” said Pat Jurgielewicz, co-chair of the Tag Sale Committee. “And while not everyone in these tough economic times can give monetarily, a tag sale seemed like the perfect opportunity for all of us to be involved.”

The tag sale will take place Saturday, Aug. 25, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Fairfield Grace United Methodist Church, 1089 Fairfield Woods Road. Those interested in donating items can contact Patty Jurgielewicz at 203-445-8896 or prj@discala.com.
