Agent Helps Clients Make a House a Home

Although a bicoastal career in book publishing had its rewards, John Hofstetter found something was missing on his grueling red-eye flights from New York to California: a home life.

To spend more time with his wife and three young daughters, this Mamaroneck native traded books for property listings six years ago and became an agent at Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage. His lifelong residency in the area has provided him with the kind of perspective that's invaluable to his clients.

“I decided it was time to make a career change, and I had bought and sold property on my own — I figured [real estate] would be a good fit,” he said.

He now serves the areas of Mamaroneck, Rye Neck (including Shore Acres), Larchmont, New Rochelle, Rye, Harrison, West Harrison, Scarsdale, Eastchester, Purchase and White Plains.

Hofstetter’s tie to Westchester County isn’t just that he lives and works there, though. He has been a trustee in the Village of Mamaroneck for several terms and has also served two past terms on the Mamaroneck Library's Board of Directors. His dedication should come as no surprise given that his parents held these positions many years ago.

He tries to help his clients by showing them the benefits of each area or community by encouraging them to “weigh the intangibles.” According to Hofstetter, that means drawing attention to the kind of amenities you can’t easily put a price tag on — such as the quality of the local library, youth sports organizations and a property's proximity to business district or waterfront.

“I try to give clients as much information as possible to make financial judgment — we’re buying and selling the ability to have a certain quality of life,” he said.

When he isn’t working, Hofstetter spends time with his wife Jennifer and daughters Julia, Sarah and Emily, who all attend the Mamaroneck schools.
