WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Former State Assemblyman Robert Castelli, R-Lewisboro, is the latest candidate to seek the state Senate seat currently held by Greg Ball.

“Recently, at the urging of many of my former Assembly constituents, I entertained the possibility of returning to public life. The recent turn of events involving Sen. Ball has opened up the opportunity of service in an environment where I can be even more effective, on behalf of a larger constituency,” the former lawmaker stated in a press release announcing his candidacy.

Ball, R-Patterson, announced on Friday , May 16, that he would not seek re-election to his state Senate seat. In his announcement, he endorsed Yorktown Councilman Terrence Murphy, who is also seeking the Republican Party's support. Justin Wagner, a Cortlandt resident, is running as a Democrat.

Castelli previously represented the 89th Assembly District. The district included parts of northeastern and central Westchester County. It was redrawn in 2012 and renumbered as the 93rd District, with North Salem being added. At the time, Castelli was critical of the redistricting, according to an old press release.

Castelli lost his 2012 re-election bid for the Assembly seat to David Buchwald, D-White Plains, who is the current officeholder.
