Berra is up by just 16 votes, according to the results.  In total, the results show that the incumbent has 1,623 votes (50 percent) and that the challenger has 1,607 votes (50 percent).

Neither candidate could be reached for comment late Tuesday.

Berra, the Democratic candidate, was appointed to the seat because Michael Schiliro resigned to become town supervisor. Mezzancello, the Republican candidate, has served on the town's Planning Board.

Berra also ran on the Independence and Conservative ballot lines.

The special election is to fill the remainder of the seat's term. The council seat is scheduled to be up for a regular election next November.
