WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. - First responders in Scarsdale had to channel their inner MacGyver to assist a motorist that overturned her vehicle on the Hutchinson River Parkway.

Firefighters, local and county police and paramedics were dispatched at approximately 2:22 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 21 to a stretch of the parkway in Scarsdale, where a driver had rolled down an embankment, with her SUV coming to a rest on its side in a thicket of trees, pinning the driver in her vehicle.

Veteran firefighters from the Scarsdale Fire Department were able to stabilize the rolled-over vehicle and removed the front half of the roof with hydraulic and battery powered tools. The driver was then lowered onto a backboard and secured to a stokes basket.

Firefighters proceeded to assemble a low-angle rope rescue system with a “3:1 mechanical advantage to safely haul the patient up the steep embankment,” officials said. Once on level ground, paramedics tended to the driver and transported her to a local hospital for treatment.

Crews from the Greenville and Hartsdale Fire Departments offered an assist to the Scarsdale Fire Department while they tended to the driver and the rollover. The rescue came just hours after crews needed to use the Jaws of Life to rescue a woman following a fatal wrong-way crash on the parkway.

Officials noted that “Scarsdale firefighters train extensively with many types of rescue tools and equipment. This training allows them to utilize multiple tools simulateneously to mitigate complex emergency calls.”
