Beginning on Wednesday and extending through Tuesday, June 13, state police troopers will be utilizing both marked patrol vehicles and Concealed Identity Traffic Enforcement vehicles as they encourage motorists to slow down on Hudson Valley roads.
According to police, speeding is listed as a contributing factor in nearly one-third of all fatal crashes in New York. More than 42,000 people die as a result of traffic crashes each year in America’s highways and hundreds of thousands are seriously injured.
Last year, during June’s Speed Week campaign, state police troopers issued more than 21,000 traffic tickets, including more than 10,000 for speeding. An additional 600 were for distracted driving and more than 200 for violations of New York’s Move Over Law.
“The goal of this campaign, and enforcement year round, is to reduce speed-related crashes and improve safe travel for drivers and passengers on New York’s roads,” State Police Superintendent George Beach II stated. “Obeying the speed limit and driving defensively will reduce the number of fatal accidents and increase safety for everyone on the highway.”
