At approximately 5:20 p.m. on Thursday, April 6, police were dispatched to the ShopRite location on Bedford Road in Bedford Hills, where an asset protection officer reported a theft that occurred days earlier.

According to police, the store employee claimed that a white male in his 50s “loaded up a shopping cart with beer, covered with paper towels and exited the store without paying.” A different employee followed the man to the parking lot to stop him and retrieve the cart, but the man drove off.

Police said that the second employee recorded what was believed to be the man’s license plate number, but the plate and description of the vehicle proved to be incorrect. The man - whose identity was not disclosed - has reportedly been located and officers advised the protection officer to file reports of possible crimes in a more timely fashion

  • Shortly before 5 p.m. on Friday, April 7, officers responded to Bedford Road in Bedford Hills, where there was a reported one-vehicle accident. The driver, a 34-year-old from Katonah, was traveling southbound when he abruptly moved into the northbound lane, striking a guard rail and Town of Bedford street sign before coming to a stop when he struck a tree.

The driver told police he was adjusting his radio using his cellphone, which distracted him before the crash. Police cited him for operating a vehicle on a public highway without a hands-free device and for speeding before helping clear the scene.

  • Earlier that morning, a caller on Chestnut Ridge in Bedford Hills complained to police that an acquaintance was dumping auto parts on his property. After being contacted, police reported that the second party was permitted by the landowner to leave the materials and that he owed him money. The situation was deemed a civil manner by officers and they provided the proper procedure to deal with the disagreement. The man who dumped the auto parts also agreed to remove the materials from the property.
  • Over the span of two hours on Monday, April 3, police had to deal with a pair of macabre incidents involving dead animals. Shortly before noon police responded to Haines Road in Bedford Hills, where there was a reported dead cat in a dumpster. Animal control officers removed the body, though testing did not reveal any microchip identification.

At 1:51 p.m. that same day, a dog was found dead on the side of Upper Hook Road in Katonah. It could not be identified, and the carcass was placed in a police freezer for crematorium pick up.
