Officer Ed Berdecia found 22-year-old Janina Aguirre of Jersey City sitting alone in a stopped 2007 Nissan sedan, its engine running, in a safety zone on the bridge's New Jersey-bound lower level around 2 a.m., the authority's Joseph Pentangelo said.

The passenger side of the Nissan's front bumper was heavily damaged and its front tire shredded, exposing the wheel's rim, he said.

Aguirre's "eyes were bloodshot and watery, her speech was slow and there was a strong odor of alcoholic beverage about her," Pentangelo said. "She failed a field sobriety test, losing her balance and swaying, and she failed a breath test."

Her blood alcohol level was .15 -- nearly twice the legal limit, he said.

The car was impounded and Aguirre was arrested and charged with DWI , careless driving and delaying traffic, Pentangelo said.

She was released to a responsible adult pending a detention hearing, he said.
