The incident began when a Stamford woman was walking with her two children and a dog at about 4 p.m. Friday, according to Greenwich police.
The children — a 13-month-old toddler and a 6-week-old infant — were within a Uppababy double stroller near the northeast corner of Eagle Pond on the causeway, police said.
As the mother stopped to talk with a friend, the carriage was on uneven ground, police said. It suddenly tipped over and slid about 7 feet down an embankment and struck a large rock, police said.
The two baby carriers were dislodged from the lower wheeled portion of the stroller, throwing the two children in opposite directions and into the water, police said.
Greenwich Police Officer Thomas Heustis, who was off-duty and enjoying the beautiful spring-like day, immediately dove into the water and rescued the two babies while the mother scrambled down the embankment, police said.
Three other civilians bystanders arrived almost immediately and came to the assistance of the mother and the two children, police said.
The mother and her two infants were transported to the Stamford Hospital emergency room as a precautionary measure, but all three are unharmed and went home, police said.
The parents of the children are keeping their identities anonymous but they thanked everyone for helping, especially Huestis, who they said was "tremendous," police said.
