Kenneth T. Chevalier, 24, of 21 Woodland Place, White Plains, N.Y., was charged with interfering with an officer.
The incident began when a police officer pulled over a vehicle that had had made an unsafe lane change and nearly struck a police vehicle near 142 Bedford St. at 1:15 a.m., Sgt. Kelly Connelly said. The driver of the 2003 Ford vehicle was a 26-year-old woman with a 29-year-old male passenger along, police said. The passenger got out of the vehicle but returned to it when told by officers, police said.
However, Chevalier wandered over and walked to the car to approach the male passenger, Connelly said.
"He's my boss," Chevalier told the unimpressed police officer, who ordered him to step back. Chevalier disregarded the order and then walked into the middle of Bedford Street as people were leaving bars and restaurants, Connelly said.
He was again told to step away, and when he didn't, officers decided to arrest him, although Chevalier once again didn't comply to the satisfaction of officers, police said.
"There was a little bit of a struggle," Connelly said. "He had to get physically restrained and taken down to the ground."
An officer involved in the arrest suffered a slight hand injury that was checked out at Stamford Hospital, Connelly said. He was released.
Despite his lack of cooperation at the scene, Chevalier was cooperative when he was processed at the police station and released on a $1,000 bond, Connelly said.
He is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court on May 18.
The driver wasn't given a ticket but was warned about her driving, Connelly said.
