HAWTHORNE, N.Y. -- A fire extinguisher accidentally discharged on a school bus on Tuesday afternoon, exposing some children to the potentially toxic chemical spray, according to Mount Pleasant police.

Late Tuesday, Alyson Walsh, a spokeswoman for MountPleasant Central School District said "there were no injuries or exposure to speak of as was implied in the (original) article."

However, an unspecified number of Columbus Elementary School children en route to Hawthorne Elementary School were coughing and exhibiting other symptoms, according to a police department spokesman. They were being examined about 4 p.m.

Mount Pleasant police and Emergency Medical Services personnel were still examining children about 5 p.m. in the school cafeteria at 225 Memorial Drive.

Police said no children were seriously hurt and none required hospitalization.

Mount Pleasant Central School District released this statement at 10 p.m.:

"This afternoon, a fire extinguisher discharged on a school bus carrying students from Columbus Elementary School to Hawthorne Elementary School. All students on the bus were checked by school nurses and no serious injuries were reported. Mount Pleasant Police along with local EMS were called and available to students and parents as needed. Parents were advised to contact their family pediatrician if needed."

"The school district, working with the district's bus company, Royal Coach Lines, is conducting an investigation into the cause of the extinguisher discharge. No foul play is suspected," the MPCSD statement said.
