CHAPPAQUA, N.Y. -- The building that housed Whispering Pines flower shop and was severely damaged by a fire last month has been torn down.

Rubble and the foundation are reminders of the building, which stood at 91 N. Bedford Road, with equipment being used to scoop up debris. A fire smell was noticeable in the area despite time having passed.

The future of the property is unknown. Gene Sheridan, whose family owns the site through a partnership, said it was “too early” to decide. He was among several people present for the Monday demolition.

After being displaced from the April 11 blaze, Whispering Pines relocated to a temporary location at 83 S. Greeley Ave. Store owner Beth Hundgen, who recently expressed thanks for support she received, was also at the demolition.

Residents who lived in the apartments in the building  were displaced by the fire, however, most have since found new housing, according to Sheridan, although he did not know what the status was for two people. The building had two apartments, one on the second floor and another on the third, he said.

Sheridan also discussed the history of the structure, noting it was built in 1905 by George Hunter, a Quaker farmer.
