The father and son, both from the Bronx, got into distress after jumping from a pontoon boat, according to Kieran O'Leary, a spokesman for the Westchester County Police Department.

The incident began at 4:49 p.m. on Sunday when a 17-year-old leapt from the boat to retrieve a hat belonging to his mother, O'Leary said. The had blown into the lake.

When the boy appeared to be in distress, his father dove into Playland Lake to help him, O'Leary said.

The pontoon boat, with about 20 people on it, is run by a private concessionaire who offers rides around the lake to patrons at the county-owned Playland Park.

According to eyewitnesses, both males went underwater briefly but were able to swim to the surface. "The crew on the pontoon boat tossed life vests to the pair to help them stay afloat and passengers and crew hauled them back aboard the boat,' O'Leary said.

They were brought back to shore and taken by Port Chester-Rye ambulance to Greenwich Hospital.

The teenage boy was expected to be released, while his father was kept overnight for observation, according to county police.
