Conway died of respiratory complications, according to the New York Times.

Conway, who was 86 years old, is largely credited with many of the major innovations and improvements that MTA passengers have enjoyed the last few decades, including the introduction of the Metrocard and elimination of “two-fare zones” to reduce the average cost for commuters.

A former banker and attorney, Conway got his start with the MTA as its Westchester representative before being named the chairman by then Gov. George Pataki in 1995, a role he relished in until he stepped down in 2001.

Since stepping down as chairman, Conway led funding efforts for the Capital Program from 2002 to 2004, which allowed for groundbreaking projects such as the Second Avenue Subway, East Side Access and the expansion of the 7-line train in Manhattan. Since 2006, Conroy has served on the Thruway’s Board of Directors, overseeing nearly 600-miles of highway roads, including the Tappan Zee Bridge.

“Virgil was a hugely influential and effective chairman, and many of the successes and accomplishments the MTA celebrates today are the result of his hard work and his heartfelt service to the region,” MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast said in a statement. “He remains a beloved member of the MTA family, and he will be sorely missed.”

Funeral arrangements have not yet been confirmed. A cause of death has not been announced.
