Updated at 2 p.m. WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- A flood advisory has been added until 4:15 p.m. Thursday in Westchester County as thunderstorms move through the region, the National Weather Service said.
At 1:15 p.m., NWS Doppler Radar indicated numerous heavy showers and thunderstorms developing across the area and tracking to the Northeast.
Also, a severe thunderstorm warning was issued for Westchester County until 4:15 p.m. The warning is for Ridgefield, Danbury, Georgetown, Wilton and Redding as well as the larger surrounding area.
Radar indicated a severe thunderstorm capable of producing quarter size hail and damaging winds of more than 60 mph. The storm was located near Bedford, N.Y., and moving northeast.
Continuous cloud to ground lightning is possible. People are advised to move indoors immediately. Doppler Radar indicates some weak rotation within the storm. The weather service said a tornado was not likely but could develop. If a tornado is spotted, act quickly and move to a safe spot, such as a basement or interior room.
Rainfall rates will exceed 1 inch per hour in the heaviest storms, it said.
Urban and small stream flooding can be expected across the area. Do not drive your vehicle into areas where water covers the roadway. Turn around and find another route.
Excessive runoff from the storm will cause flooding in urban area, including highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low-lying spots. Be prepared to take action if the flooding threat increases, the weather service warned.
WESTCHESTER, N.Y. – The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for the Westchester County area.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm are predicted after 1 p.m. through 2 p.m. on Friday. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall and hail is possible.
Heavy rainfall with a rate of 1-2 inches an hour are possible, and flash flooding is possible in some areas.
