WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Metro-North issued a message from its president Monday to reassure commuters who use the Hudson and Harlem Lines in New York.
Here is the complete message from Metro-North President Howard Permut on Friday evening’s New Haven Line derailment:
To Our Hudson & Harlem Line Customers:
Friday evening’s derailment and subsequent sideswipe in Bridgeport on our New Haven Line was a serious occurrence, and I assure you that all the employees at Metro-North are working diligently to operate the railroad in the safest manner possible.
Everyone at Metro-North deeply shares the concerns of the families and friends of those involved in this tragic incident. We thank the first responders who assisted with safely removing the passengers from the trains and transporting those who were injured to area hospitals.
We are actively supporting the National Transportation Safety Board in conducting an exhaustive investigation that will determine the cause of the incident.
Safety is of paramount importance to us. Please be aware that the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has specific standards in maintaining a safe railroad. Metro-North’s operating practices and maintenance standards meet or exceed all of these standards. The FRA conducts routine monitoring, inspections and audits of our practices and has taken no exceptions. Since Friday, we have taken extra precautions, including additional track inspections, and will increase this effort going forward.
In addition, the railroad regularly conducts preparedness drills in our territory, which provide first responders and train crews with “hands on” training for what to do during an emergency.
You may experience some crowding on your trains due to some of our New Haven Line customers who are seeking to use neighboring lines as an alternative. Thank you for your continued support of Metro-North and your patience as we continue to work to restore service.
