In late October, Hurricane Sandy hit the New York metro area, including the Town of North Castle. Although the storm struck two months ago, the town is still feeling the storm’s effects to the tune of $580,000 and counting.
North Castle Town Supervisor Joan Goldberg hopes most of that outlay will be paid back by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
North Castle’s costs were incurred both during and after the storm, the largest expense being brush and tree removal at $250,000. Other expenses included operating generators for two weeks to keep the water and sewer systems running, along with keeping emergency shelters open for residents and damaged infrastructure around the town.
With FEMA expected to pick up 75 percent of the $580,000, the town will be on the hook for roughly $145,000. However, Goldberg said these estimates are in the preliminary stages, with the possibility of more costs still being added.
The town will most likely remember Sandy for knocking out power to 1,800 homes.
